New Painting Technique Experiment
I tried a new painting technique on two miniatures. I found the technique from One-Ring's September Painting Challenge discussion thread, in which BizarreWarstar told how he did his awesome Huorn vs. Troll diorama. The basic idea was to start from black undercoat, drybrush the miniature with progressing lighter greys and then give it glazes/washes wit various colours.
For this Harad spearman, I tried glazing the mini with Citadel Washes instead of paints. The mini was left quite dark, but overall the technique produced a really nice effect.
In this second one I experimented with a miniature undercoated white. I gave it some depth with a black wash and then glazed with Citadel Washes as in the previous one. The technique seems to work quite nicely for cloth, wood and skin but metals don't really work too well. The "golden" armour is done with a sepia wash; it looks OK in the photo but is a bit bland in real life.
Overall the idea is - as I understood it - is to first get the shading/highlighting done using just black and white, and then colour the miniature with coloured glazes. I might try this again with regular paints and I think the strongly pigmented inks would work really well in this technique too.
