I painted a group of Goblins from the Hobbit boxed set today. I tested my new spray gun for several phases of painting and it seemed to work really well.

  1. I primed the miniatures with spray gun and Vallejo's USN Grey primer. The primer spread very evenly and did not obscure details. I used a light grey primer just because I happened to have it.
  2. After priming I basecoated the miniatures with GW's Dheneb Stone Foundation Paint. I diluted the paint about 1:1 with water and sprayed it on the models. The basecoat was really even and thin, and covered the primer well with just one application.
  3. The next phase was shading the miniatures by spraying a coat of diluted Baal Red on them. Once again the new spray gun got full points. The wash gathered nicely in the deep recesses as it should have.
  4. At this point I congratulated myself for purchasing this new spray gun and throwing the GW piece of junk away.
After all the spraying it was time for good old brushwork. I first painted Dheneb Stone on the goblin skins avoiding the deepest recesses to keep the shading intact. Then I highlighted them with Pallid Wych Flesh, which is a very light grayish beige.

After painting the flesh there was very little else to do. I basecoated the weapons with Boltgun Metal, cloth Scorched Brown and hair grey. Then I gave the parts a liberal brown wash and highlighted them with lighter silvers, greys and browns.
